More details...

The concept of an annual convocation for the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church evolved more than twenty years ago out of the context of denominational restructure.  The 1982 General Conference determined that the C.M.E. Church was not receiving optimum benefits from its several general departments.  From the inception of the church in 1870, general departments designed to meet the varying Connectional needs of the church were from time to time established, abolished, or modified.  Such departments were necessary and inevitable as this "tender plant of God" sought to serve its people, African Americans, facing the varied challenges of Reconstruction, Jim Crow, migration, and urbanization over a span of some 112 years.
